Matthew Effect and school performance

Why Third Grade Is So Important: The ‘Matthew Effect’

NO child is born unmotivated. Poor motivation and underachievement are learned. I have written about this often (see Reversing Underachievement Among Gifted Black Students).  This is great article on the Matthew Effect — and the need to save our children before the effect kicks in and and becomes stubborn to change. In schools and communities, too many Black students, mostly Black males, are made to believe that school is NOT for them; that they cannot do well in school. We must prevent this brainwashing, and also fight to un-brainwash our Black students as soon as they show signs of succumbing to prejudice and discrimination.
